RIVERDALE CULTURAL DAY

Riverdale School recently invited the Manawatu Multicultural Council to participate at their Cultural Day, held by the school on 21 June 2024. MMC had representatives from three of our community groups, who present their cultures in different forms during four sessions at school on the day. Ling Wang from our Chinese Community presented a Tai Chi session, Maimoona Fawad & Hina Humayun from Pakistan prepared an interactive display which included traditional clothing, music and dance, while Hitomi Wilson along with some amazing Japanese exchange students presented an Origami workshop and a Kendama workshop in two engaging and hands-on sessions with Riverdale School students.
It was wonderful to participate and see the richness of the cultures on display by the students that dressed in traditional clothing. MMC and the Welcoming Schools Programme look forward to seeing what Riverdale School has in store in 2025. The Post article by Warwick Smith: https://www.thepost.co.nz/.../richness-cultures-display...
POTLUCK DINNER | JAPAN

In the spirit of Matariki, MMC alongside the Japanese Community co-hosted the June Potluck Dinner at the end of last month, highlighting Tanabata ใŸใชใฐใŸ, also known as the Japanese star festival. We celebrated by having our attendees participate in writing wishes on tanzaku (็Ÿญๅ†Š), small pieces of paper, and hanging them on bamboo - as practiced in present day Japan. This was followed by the enjoyment of incredible Japanese cuisines as well as mouth-watering dishes brought by all other communities.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Japanese Community for their amazing collaboration as well as for UCOLโ€™s wonderful venue support.
The next potluck dinner will be on Friday, 26 July at the Awapuni Community Centre.

Mฤ€NAWATIA A MATARIKI

Mฤnawatia a Matariki
According to Mฤori beliefs, the appearance of Matariki in the morning sky during mid-winter signifies the Mฤori New Year, or Te Mฤtahi o te Tau. It serves as a reminder to honour the departed, cherish the present, and plan for the future. This period is meant to be spent with family and friends, enjoying food (kai), songs (waiata), games (tฤkaro), and haka.
In the past, our ancestors looked to Matariki for assistance with their harvest. When Matariki vanished in April/May, it signaled the time to store crops for the upcoming winter. Upon its return in June/July, our ancestors would interpret the stars to forecast the upcoming season. A clear and bright array of stars indicated a warm and plentiful winter, while dim stars foretold a harsh season.
Due to the reliance on the Mฤori lunar calendar instead of the European one, the dates for Matariki vary each year. This year, Matariki will be observed from June 29 to July 6, with a national public holiday on June 28.

FIRST VOICE 2024

First Voice is an annual event held by Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School (PNINS) for students whose first language is not English. PNINS has many students who are bilingual and even multilingual and during the First Voice event, students are given the opportunity to showcase written use of their first language.
It has been proven that encouraging the active use of oneโ€™s first language can have positive effects on the childrenโ€™s self-esteem, their relationships with their parents, their eventual proficiency in other languages, and their learning in general.
The hugely successful event, held for the 25th time took place on the 11th of June at the Palmerston North Convention Centre. Students were assisted by volunteer mentors who also spoke their first language. Students completed their writing, which will be published by the Palmerston North Central Library next term.
A total of 26 languages were represented, and 66 students participated this year.
MMC is honoured to continue its collaboration with PNINS and the Palmerston North City Library to source volunteer mentors. A special thank you to all the mentors who supported the kids in writing their work in their own languages.
We look forward to the next round in 2025.
