Race Relations Day 2025

🌍 Race Relations Day – Open Mic Poetry Reading & Potluck Dinner πŸ“–πŸ²
Last Friday, we had an incredible evening celebrating Race Relations Day in collaboration with the Palmerston North Library, Manawatu Multicultural Council, and Welcoming Communities! πŸ™Œ
✨ The event was hosted by Professor Leonel Alvarado – originally from Honduras, Leonel has lived in Aotearoa New Zealand since 2002. A published author of 14 books, he teaches Latin American literature and culture at Massey University and the University of New England in Australia. Leonel is also an Officer of the Order of Rio Branco for his contributions to the Portuguese language and Brazilian culture in New Zealand.
Participants shared poems they love or have written – in English or their first language(s) – celebrating the power of words, diverse voices, and the stories that connect us all.
🍴 The Potluck Dinner was filled with delicious dishes, great conversations, and meaningful connections. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and made it such a special gathering!
Let’s keep the spirit of diversity and community alive all year round.
